Chapter 18

The 15th Day’s Goal

“These ones are really good, too,” I muttered. I glanced at Slimer, who was just letting out a satisfied hum. “Yeah, thanks for bringing me out here, buddy.”

It was early in the morning, and Slimer and I were out in a small clearing in the jungle where the widest variety of colorful flowers I had seen so far grew. The little guy had led me here at my request this morning, and as it turned out, a few others had followed us.

A curiosity-filled grunt signaled his arrival.

“Hey Giddy, and slimes,” I said to the ape who had followed us with two slimes on his shoulder. “Feel free to sit. It’s a nice morning.”

Giddy kneeled down beside me, and I returned to picking flowers.

“Wondering what I’m up to, buddy?”

Giddy nodded, his two slime friends, Stream and Sprinkle, leaning closer by stretching their bodies.

I thought back to how sad Enkriah’s statue looked, overlooking the ocean on that barren patch of land.

“I’m picking some flowers for Enkriah. I’m probably going to make her a bouquet, too,” I said, matching every word and sentiment with a vivid image.

Giddy tilted his head and scratched his mask.

I started imagining Enkriah’s reaction to each flower and kept hoping she’d appreciate each one. I knew she couldn’t see them, but I hoped against all odds that she would somehow see some splash of color. But then my rendition of how I imagined her lower half to look came into the fantasy and snapped me out of it.

Enkriah was a Demon. I could focus on the parts of her that were “Human” all I wanted, but it didn’t change the truth.

I let out a laugh, confusing Giddy and stealing his attention. “I wonder if my buddies would laugh at me. Here I am, filling my head with excuses for Enkriah’s past and fantasizing about making her happy.” I got up and shrugged. “But oh well. They’re dead, and I’m not. They’re allowed to make fun of me—or curse me—all they want. I’m going back, Giddy,” I said with an armful of flowers.

Giddy mirrored me, carrying his own armful of flowers, complete with that goofy grin of his.

We returned to my house, and I started arranging the flowers. Giddy followed my moves. He
